Mindfulness (sati) is the steady, gentle awareness of what's actually happening right now — in your body, feelings, and mind — noticed clearly and without getting swept away by it. It matters because so much of our stress comes from running on autopilot or being lost in worry about the past and future; mindfulness brings us back to the present, where we can see things as they really are and respond with wisdom instead of reacting blindly. A simple everyday touchstone: feeling the breath move in and out, or really tasting your tea, instead of letting your thoughts drift elsewhere.
