Dependent Origination

paṭiccasamuppādaDuyên khởi
In brief

Dependent Origination (paṭiccasamuppāda) is the Buddha's teaching that nothing arises on its own — everything comes to be in dependence on conditions, captured in the phrase "when this exists, that arises; when this ceases, that ceases." It matters because it shows that our suffering isn't random or fixed: it unfolds through a chain of causes, which means it can also be unwound. Think of a plant that only grows when seed, soil, water, and warmth come together — remove a condition and it doesn't appear; in the same way, understanding what conditions our craving and stress points the way toward freedom from them.
