Clinging

upādānaThủ
In brief

Clinging (upādāna) is the tightening of desire into a grip — when wanting something becomes needing to hold onto it, whether a pleasure, an opinion, a habit, or a sense of who we are. It matters because this grasping is what keeps us bound to suffering: the tighter we cling, the more it hurts when things change, as they always do. Think of how it feels to refuse to let go of being right in an argument, long after the moment has passed.
