The Five Hindrances

nīvaraṇaNăm triền cái
In brief

The Five Hindrances are five mental states that cloud the mind and get in the way of calm and clear seeing: wanting and craving (sensual desire), ill-will or aversion, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and worry, and doubt. The Buddha taught that recognizing these as they arise—rather than fighting them—is itself part of the practice, since a mind free of them naturally settles into peace and insight. You meet them every time you sit to meditate: the itch to check your phone, the flicker of irritation, the heavy eyelids, the racing to-do list, or the quiet 'is this even working?'
