🧠 Mind & Matter
Consciousness
cittaTâm
In brief
In early Buddhist teaching, citta is the basic activity of knowing — the mind as it lights up to experience an object, whether a sight, a sound, a memory, or a feeling. It isn't a permanent self or soul, but a flow of momentary acts of awareness that arise and pass away one after another, each colored by the mental qualities that accompany it. Understanding citta matters because the whole path begins here: when you notice the simple "knowing" that registers a sound the instant it reaches you, you're meeting the very thing the teachings invite you to observe, calm, and free.
